One of the biggest questions I get from couples after they book their engagement session is “What should we wear?!”
And I get it, it can feel like a lot of pressure trying to choose outfits that not only look good, but also feel like you. So I wanted to walk through a real engagement session to give you some inspiration and help you feel more confident when planning your own. Jasmine and Austin’s engagement session at the St. Louis Public Library is the perfect example of how thoughtful outfit choices can completely elevate your photos.
For the first part of their session, Jasmine and Austin went with a more formal, elevated look, which paired beautifully with the classic architecture of the library. Dressier outfits tend to photograph so timelessly, especially in locations with elegant backdrops like the St. Louis Public Library. Think flowy dresses, heels, dress shirts, or more structured pieces.
This is the perfect opportunity to go a little more “extra” than your everyday style!
One of my favorite things they did was include a second outfit that felt more relaxed and playful! After we finished inside, Jasmine changed into a super cute, more casual outfit for the outdoor portion of their session. Austin also switched into a more casual yet sophisticated look that complemented hers perfectly. This gave their gallery so much variety and allowed their personalities to shine in a different way.
Having two outfits gives you the best of both worlds:
Instead of matching exactly, aim for outfits that complement each other.
Soft, neutral tones and subtle color palettes always photograph beautifully and keep the focus on you rather than your clothing. Jasmine and Austin’s outfits worked so well together without feeling overly “matchy,” which made everything feel effortless.
Your outfits should feel cohesive with your environment.
For example:
Jasmine and Austin’s outfit choices fit perfectly with both the indoor and outdoor settings of their session, which made everything feel intentional and well thought out.
The best photos happen when you feel like yourself! If you’re constantly adjusting your outfit or wearing something that doesn’t feel natural, it can show in your photos. Choose pieces that you feel confident and comfortable in, that confidence makes all the difference.
At the end of the day, your engagement session is about capturing your relationship in a way that feels true to you. Your outfits should enhance that, not take away from it. If you’re planning your own engagement session and need help choosing outfits, I’m always happy to help guide you! I love working with my couples to create a look that feels cohesive, natural, and true to their style.
